Prices have soared to higher levels over the past few weeks from around 23 cents per pound in May. It was last quoted at roughly 27 cents per pound early in July According to traders, sunflower oil is basically unavailable for new sales due to the lack of sunflower seed supply, forcing oil mills to drastically curtail crush activity.

World Commodity Profiles examined end uses of vegetable oils for both edible and non-edible applications. Consumption of the four main vegetable oils grew strongly by over 7% in 2004-2005 with the major growth occurring in China and the European Union-25 (EU-25), followed to a lesser extent by the United States and India. Oil consumption is seen as increasing at a rate of 3-4% per year in Brazil.

Business Times (Malaysia) 12-04-2002 EXTENDED crunch in supply is expected to keep palm oil prices swelling and hit RM1,700 a tone by March next year, industry experts say. At present, the commodity price hovers around RM1,580 a tone. The price has been on the strong side since early this year as global weather conditions kept supply in the world's other 16 edible oils and fats on the low side.
